UNTIL HE BRINGS ME HOME

You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:24-26

win or lose: reflections on notions of God in professional sports

They joke that when you win, it must mean that God is on your side

and if you lose, it must mean that God isn’t.

But if you’re Tebow and you fumble the ball

if you’re Lin and you get 10 turnovers in a game

if you study your hardest and fail

if you compete with all your might and come out on the bottom

if you lose

does that change anything about God?

That seems quite man-centered, not to mention non sequitur

the character of God is not determined by how many points are on the board

or your team’s win-lose record that season

or the letter on your midterm when you get it back

or how much you succeed (or don’t).

For the character of God is displayed in the Word

with the gospel therein

and these things do not change

they do not ever change.

The disposition of God has already been revealed

losing or failing is nothing compared to the redemption provided for hellbound sinners at the cross of Christ

winning or succeeding is nothing compared to the redemption provided for hellbound sinners at the cross of Christ

he is holy, he is sovereign, he is just, he is loving, and he is always the same

trust him

win or lose.
