regarding pams
It’s a distinctive concern that seems to prevail in Asian-American Christian fellowships:
that the men are pams—passive Asian men.
Or, as I once heard it described in one particularly bad case,
spams—super passive Asian men.
It’s true; I certainly would not enjoy being one to whom a word like “pam” could apply. But I hope that the basis of this concern is a biblical one. I hope that it is not our highest goal to be confident, charismatic, outgoing, sociable, well-spoken men. I hope that our sisters not are encouraging brothers to be bold for the sake of being bold, or take on leadership for the sake of taking on leadership, or actively serving for the sake of actively serving.
Rather, I hope that we are primarily striving to be biblical—and, thus, striving to have a correct knowledge of God, obey him, learn more of him in his Word, increase in affection for him, proclaim the gospel in word and deed, serve the church, compassionately meet the needs of others as Christ would, love other members of the body, be discerning, work for personal holiness, develop a strong hatred for sin, and be humble.
And yes; boldness is biblical, our confidence is in Christ, service is a must, and leadership is our role. But do it out of a love for God and in light of the gospel of his glory. It’s all about the heart.
