UNTIL HE BRINGS ME HOME

You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:24-26

notes to ourselves on: rebuke

“Well, you know, this is really nit-picky, and it’s not even that big a deal, and nobody’s perfect anyway and I honestly think that you’re a really good person and have come a long way, so don’t take it too personally, but I’ve noticed that sometimes maybe you kind of sort of a little bit have a tiny tendency to _______. But really, it’s a small thing.”

-us, while “rebuking”

…what was that?!

-We should love and, out of love, humbly rebuke; love desires the highest good for the other; the highest good is knowing, delighting in, and obeying Christ; we should rebuke as a means to their achievement of this end.

-Be gracious. Christ is the example of grace and gentleness. And we must be humble in our love for others, as we ourselves have received much unmerited favor. Remember the gospel.

-We can’t confuse being gracious and gentle with succumbing to a fear of man. We must always do the former, and never the latter.

-Love people, don’t need them. Love them more and hate sin more than you care about what they think of you.

-Be gracious.

-Forgive people for pridefully resenting correction. And ask: when I get rebuked, how do I react? Do I care more about fighting sin and getting Christ than I do about my reputation?

-Be gracious.

-Get to the point.
